This is a life size oil painting of an immature female Peregrine Falcon of the subspecies that is resident on the Queen Charlotte Island archipelago, off the west coast of British Columbia. It is the largest, and darkest of the various races of Peregrine Falcon, a species that is found around the world. Unlike the others in North America, this form is non-migratory. I think at times it may have been considered a distinct species, called the Peale’s Falcon or Peale’s Peregrine. They feed heavily on seabirds, in this case an Ancient Murrelet.
