This small painting shows a pair of Blue-tailed Bee-eaters, life size. This is, however, the nominate race, which does not have a blue tail, and which nests exclusively in Madagascar, and winters in continental Africa. The better known race, Merops superciliosus philippinus, does have a blue tail, but not the white eyebrow stripe that gives the species its scientific name superciliosus , and is widely distributed in Southeast Asia, breeding mostly to the north, in China, and then wintering throughout much of the region to the south, including the Philippines and New Guinea. at times the two races have been separated into distinct species Cette peinture représente un couple de guêpiers de madagascar. Il s'agit ici de la race nominale qui ne possède pas de queue bleue, niche exclusivement à Madagascar et prend ses quartiers d'hiver sur le continent africain. La race la plus connue, Merops superciliosus philipus, affiche une queue bleue mais ne possède par le sourcil blanc qui donne à l'espèce son nom scientifique. Cette dernière est largement répandue dans l'Asie du sud-Est, nichant principalement au nord, en Chine, puis hivernant surtout dans les régions méridionales comme les Philippines et la Nouvelle-Guinée. Depuis peu, les deux races ont été séparées comme espèce à part entière.
