Bearded Bellbird - Procnias averano

Araponga barbu

Bearded Bellbird male adult breeding
This amazing bird has one of the loudest calls of any species. The males spend much of the day calling to attract females by producing loud 'BOK' calls or a series of bell-like noises much like a hammer striking an anvil. This species is primarily a frugivore which favours primary rain forest -in this habitat food is so plentiful that the males spend only a few hours foraging the remainder of the time calling. Females rear the young alone.
