Oiseaux rare, classe en Danger d'extinction , endemic de l'ile japonaise d'Okinawa (Iles Ryukyu).

On ne le trouve que dans le tier nord de l'ile, dans une region de montagnes couvertes de forets sub-tropical, appelee Yambaru, d'ou le nom japonais: Yambaru kouinaa.
